The BMI (Body Mass Index) is a scale that helps us to compare people of different heights and weights. A BMI of 35 or over with serious associated medical conditions will usually qualify you for being a weight loss surgery candidate.
There are many risks associated with a high BMI. A BMI of 40 or greater is classified as morbid obesity or obesity that has become clinically severe (see chart). This type of obesity causes other serious medical conditions, known as co-morbidities. This typically means that an individual weighs 200% their ideal body weight (usually translates to about 100 pounds overweight for most people).
