Gallbladder Surgery Q & A

What is gallbladder surgery?

Gallbladder surgery, clinically referred to as cholecystectomy, is the surgical removal of your gallbladder. At New Life Medical & Aesthetics, Dr. Naik uses minimally invasive and robotically assisted surgical techniques whenever possible to provide the best possible outcomes.

Why would I need gallbladder surgery?

The two primary reasons for gallbladder surgery are severe gallstones and acute cholecystitis — an extremely painful inflammatory condition of the gallbladder. Some of the symptoms that could indicate a gallbladder problem include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Pain that radiates from your upper abdomen through your rib cage, sternum, back, neck, and shoulders
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Bloating and gassiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount of food
  • Symptoms that are worse after eating a rich or fatty meal
  • Jaundice

You may also experience fatigue or feel like you have a sensitive stomach. Some patients live with their symptoms for years before getting help. For example, you may assume that your symptoms are just part of getting older or a side effect of your diet.

These symptoms could be due to a wide range of conditions, so it’s critical that you talk to a doctor about your symptoms and have appropriate testing to identify the disease that’s disrupting your life.

What happens during gallbladder surgery?

At New Life Medical & Aesthetics, Dr. Naik uses state-of-the-art minimally invasive robotic laparoscopic surgical techniques to perform gallbladder surgery. You have anesthesia for the operation, and in some cases, you can even go home to recover on the same day.

Dr. Naik inserts a specially designed robotic surgical tool with which he goes through the belly button so there’s no visible incision on the abdomen. He is the only surgeon in the Bakersfield, California, area who is able to perform this specialized surgical technique.

One of the other instruments he also inserts is a laparoscope: a thin tube with a light and a camera on its tip. The camera sends a video feed from inside your body to a monitor in the operating room to allow Dr. Naik to see your organs and perform your surgery without having to make a large incision in your body.

Every surgery or procedure poses a potential risk to your health, life, and well-being. Dr. Naik does everything he can to reduce the risks associated with your procedure. He also explains all the benefits and risk of your treatment and will answer your questions thoroughly to help you make the best decision about medical and surgical treatments for your health and wellness.
