IPL Q & A

What is an IPL photofacial?

An IPL photofacial is a light therapy that sends pulses of multiple wavelengths of light into your skin. The light passes through the first layer of your skin, penetrating the second layer, where it converts to heat.

The heat breaks up excess pigmentation in your skin and stimulates collagen and elastin production. These two actions both reduce the appearance of unwanted discoloration, and plump and rejuvenate your skin from within for a more youthful appearance.*

What skin imperfections can an IPL treatment address?

The team at New Life Medical & Aesthetics recommends IPL treatments to address a wide range of skin imperfections, including:

  • Age spots and sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Birthmarks
  • Varicose veins
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Rosacea
  • Wrinkles and fine lines

Dr. Naik and his team use the IconĀ® system to deliver state-of-the-art IPL treatments. The Icon is designed by the medical laser experts at CynoSure. It includes the SkintelĀ® melanin reader, which allows your provider to calibrate the treatment to meet your needs precisely as well as a cooling system that regulates the temperature of your skin

What should I expect during an IPL photofacial?

An IPL photofacial usually takes around 30 minutes. While you relax on a comfortable treatment bed, your provider gently cleans your face and applies a gel to protect your skin, helping the light energy penetrate your skin more deeply.

When your skin is ready, you and your provider wear protective glasses while they use a handheld device to direct the IPL over your skin. You may notice a warming sensation or a mild snapping feeling during your treatment.

After your treatment, your skin may be a little pink, but it will return to normal quickly. You should make sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and limit your sun exposure as the treatment can increase your photosensitivity.

Every surgery or procedure poses a potential risk to your health, life, and well-being. Dr. Naik does everything he can to reduce the risks associated with your procedure. He also explains all the benefits and risk of your treatment and will answer your questions thoroughly to help you make the best decision about medical and surgical treatments for your health and wellness.
